Author Cheryl Strayed refers to her negative and unhelpful voice as her ITS, which stands for Inner Terrible Someone, while the one that’s really got her back, that makes her feel genuinely good is the Wise Inner Sage. And those voices sometimes contradict each other so you need to know which one has your best interests at heart. Not talking about literal voices that you genuinely hear, just thoughts that you have when a decision needs to be made or something needs to be navigated. Everybody is becoming a fan of John Marrs these days and it’s definitely well deserved, so we are all bound to revisit his earlier work at some point. But I do think that it should have stayed in the past. The Vacation is a good book, especially as one of Marr’s earlier releases, and it certainly showcases his writing talent. Had it been cut down by 100 pages, I wouldn’t haven’t grown so tired of the story and been able to appreciate the characters much more. And then I realised that the book is 496 pages long, which is just too much for a book like this. However, I did feel like the story was really dragging at various points. There were two characters that I especially felt connected to, but I could picture them all quite vividly which isn’t something all authors can do very well. And just for a little while, their lives become entangled.Īs with most of Marrs books, there are a lot of characters to get used to (maybe just a few too many this time), but he describes his characters so well that it doesn’t take long to get to know them all. Multi-layered and character-driven, The Vacation is a well-developed story about a large group of characters whose paths meet by accident. 6/5/2023 0 Comments Borges alephIn The Old Patagonian Express, Paul Theroux dedicates a whole chapter to his time with Borges, describing a humble but forthright character who had come to terms with his blindness and seemed to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of literature. Borges I knew of, knew his stature but little else. It is eleven years since I first got back from my travels, and delved into the world of Garcia Marquez, Jorge Amado and Mario Vargas Llosa amongst others. She had come in from the wilderness, from “the interior,” and everything seemed too small for her – the doors, the walls, the furniture.Ī giant of South American literature who has hovered over my shoulder since I first dipped into it, to the point where I wondered if I was pointedly ignoring him. Elsa and Rafe now also have a son, Anthony ("Ant"), 7. Over time, Elsa finds her place on the Martinelli farm, and the baby (name Loreda) is born.īy 1934, Loreda is 12 and has a difficult relationship with her mother. In 1921, Elsa Wolcott is a 25-year-old unmarried woman who is not particularly pretty and too tall for most men. Her daughter, Loreda, returns home to Texas. Elsa falls in love with a union organizer and helps to organize a strike against their bosses, but gets shot by the farm boss.
